I can really only handle reading novels about WWII about once or twice a year. I had heard so much about this one that I wanted to check it out for myself. Hannah's writing is fast-paced; I found myself wanting to read "just one more chapter." I devoured this novel in between meetings, before bed; I even read it while I brushed my teeth. Even though Hannah does rely on a lot of cliches in her writing, she very accurately captures the landscapes and scenes of WWII France. I felt like I was there. ...more

Shelves: historical-fiction

An exceptional book that tells of the hardships encountered by the French women during WW2. The author shared the fear and deprivation experienced by the women in vivid detail and I found myself immersed in the story and unable to put the book down. This is a great read. I highly recommend it.

This was such a captivating story of two sisters and surviving WWII in France. I listened to this on audio and enjoyed every minute, including the tearjerking moments of their lives.
