Ultimately, I enjoyed this book--it has a great historical-fantasy balance and some good, wry humor in the narrative. I believed in the world that Clarke created (I even had some bad dreams about the gentleman with the thistle-down hair). However, it should be about, oh, 200 pages shorter.

It's no wonder that this book took 10 years for the author to write. Clark ceates an incredible world that is complex to the point where the footnotes must be read in conjunction with the story to get a complete understanding.
The book is about two magicians and their differences in opinion over what is actually the historical magical past and what role magic should play going forward. Other than that, there's about 100 things going on here.
