This was the first book chosen for my new book group -- so I will add more once we have a chance to meet in two weeks. This was also my first Octavia Butler book, which makes the score higher since partly I am just so thrilled to have read anything of hers. The story itself is fascinating, a post-apocalyptic Lord of the Flies situation, with a strong young heroine with the devastating special ability of feeling the pain of those around her. I loved Butler's Bloodchild and Kindred, and started this book with great excitement. Sadly, I just couldn't get into it. It seems to be of its time (early 1990s, and actually felt more like the 1980s) and of a mode that seems out-dated to me: an apocalyptic vision of feral people murdering each other, swarms of people trekking northwards along California's highways and a small band of found family struggling for survival. A very entertaining read about the end of the world as we know it. It reminds me a lot of The Walking Dead (with no zombies). I love the hero's journey and in this case our hero is a 18 year old young black woman who is wise beyond her years. ...more

I am so glad I picked up this book in a secondhand store. A dystopian novel, set in California (written in 1993), intriguing, thought-provoking, and just plain enjoyable reading.
