I really enjoyed this which pretty much has two halves. The first is at a slower pace than the latter but still enjoyable.

This is the best book I have read in a while. I am a big fan of Sarah Waters and I trust her to turn out quality writing with each new book. Whilst my favourite of her novels remains to be Affinity she has in no way disappointed me with this excellent book.

The tension that Waters is able to maintain throughout The Paying Guests is amazing. I pretty much read the entire thing with a stressful amount of (delicious) dread, wanting the shoe to drop already but being scared of it dropping; and when it did drop, there were still other shoes threatening to drop up until the very end.

I listened to the audiobook of this -- and definitely enjoyed the story, imagining the characters at the center of it and the lives and options they faced. I couldn't believe how long it took to get to the first kiss, and then to shift gears into a murder mystery! But actually that's what I liked the most, that it did both and did them well. It definitely got tiresome at the end - could have used about a couple hours less... ...more
