What Members Thought

After hitting a high emotional mark after a multi-book arc, this book focuses back on the Three Pines gang, and in particular, Clara and Peter. The story here was meh for me even though the book is well written. The pacing was good, but I couldn't reach the emotional engagement that I had with Penny's prior books in this series, which is why I think that the ending didn't have the impact on me that it likely should have.
Hoping to be pick up the energy again with Book 11 in the series.

Recenzia completa curand...

This was the most boring of all the Gamache books. I'm glad I'm listening to them a few years after they came out because I'd have been pretty upset if I waited a year after the explosive ending of the previous book, looking forward to the next chapter in the lives of Gamache and Co., and had been met with this turd. Penny's writing is gorgeous but I just have never liked Peter or cared what happened to him, and all the stuff about the muses and dog's breakfast was a yawn.

Penny has a very distinct authorial voice that's only getting stronger as the Gamache series progresses, and she has a particular gift for creating tension out of what goes unsaid. The mystery here putters out a bit at the end because it's a bit of a stretch, but as Penny herself said in an NPR interview, her work is a love letter to rural Quebec and its restorative powers for overworked souls.

I probably shouldn't have read two of these books in a row, because I immediately figured out who the culprit was. After a great book in this series, this one was a disappointment.
