On Christmas Eve 1977 Cleveland Amory is recruited to help rescue a stray cat from an alley. Once the cat is successfully caught Amory takes the filthy bundle home for a few days. Amory quickly falls in love with what turns out to be a pure white cat whom he keeps and names Polar Bear. This book covers the first year that Amory has Polar Bear. Something about Cleveland Amory's humor and writing style has always appealed to me. His style is somewhat formal and his language backs over itself some, which I find has the effect of extending his anecdotes. Although I could have done without the history lesson of famous cats through the ages, every morsel of communication with and about Polar Bear made this sly smile come over my face.
