I'm a little torn on how to rate this book. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't without its flaws. Most of the plot "twists" were utterly predictable. I also thought, at times, the book tried too hard to capture the vernacular - Ian, for example, is British, and every sentence he utters is loaded with British slang. It couldn't have been more obvious if every sentence had begun with "Cor, blimey." A little British slang would have been fine, but I think the author went too far. Also, the titular Amelia ...more

I've seen numerous reviews and blurbs that compare this book to Gone Girl. Don't be misled by this comparison because the two books aren't similar at all. The stories are different, and the writing styles are different. Yes, both have twists and turns, but many books do, so I wouldn't compare two books based upon that characteristic alone.

This book is immensely readable. It takes hold of you from the first few pages and appeals to common parental angst of raising your children right and being there for them. Especially in the case of single moms it plays up the endless fountain of guilt we seem to possess. I would have given it 2 1/2 stars for the level of its readability alone. You are swept along with Kate to find out the truth about her daughter's death.

Quite the page turner, makes you long for the days when kids just got in trouble for chewing gum or talking in class..... Could almost give it 4 stars simply because I couldn't stop wanting to sit down and read on. ...more
