I have read 7 books by Murakami, and in some way they are a variation on the same themes: Relationships, sex, estranged families, loneliness, music and death. I never grow tired of the themes, so I keep reading the books.

Tsukuru Tazaki was part of a close group of five friends in high school. Then after he went to college in Tokyo to study rail road station design his friends suddenly cut him out of their lives. Now in his 30s Tsukuru's girlfriend Sara thinks he should reconnect with his former friends to help heal the wound that are preventing him from living a full life. Here was another great, non-fantasy work by one of my favorite authors. I generally enjoy his more fantastic tales a bit more, but this one had a plot that struck me right in the heart. I have also felt the sting of losing people whom I loved very much, seemingly at the drop of a hat, and out of nowhere as Tsukuru does in this novel.

Why only three stars? I felt the ending was a bit weak here, and it really leaves the reader hanging a bit, with one major unresolved conflict going on.
