Another McCall Smith Vintage Short--liked it. The first of McCall Smith's books that has involved American characters--Fatty & his wife, Betty. Of Irish descent, of course, being an O'Leary. And this book focuses on the "trip of a lifetime" that Fatty & his wife take back to the homeland. Hilarious and it seems that things go from bad to worse, day by day.

I love the Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency novels so thought I'd give some of his other books a try. I found the book mostly depressing. So many bad things happened to the protagonist I just felt sorry for him.
As always I love the tone and cadence of the writing... just didn't really like the story. Guess it wasn't what I had expected so was disappointed with it. ...more
