This was a 3.5 read for me.
This tale of belonging with heavy doses of moral turpitudes and gothic undertones mesmerizes, entices, and keeps the reader guessing on the secrets and bonds of the Winslow family. A bad beach book (which is really disappointing!). The plot "twists" of this book are both obvious and improbable. Suicide, rape, Nazis--she fits everything in. The narrator is generic and her realizations are painfully slow. I was not happy to have picked this one for the start of my vacation. Ugh.

Solid read about an outsider trying to become an insider to a wealthy family. The author stated at the back of the book that she took this concept, which is prevalent throughout literature, and used it to tell the story here.
I guessed the big family secret, which is unusual for me.

I know it was no great, difficult piece of literature but when I saw some people giving it one or two stars, it made me question my taste. Or my experience of the book. Like: was I not supposed to like it after all? Or: am I really too good for this book? Naah, it was entertaining.
Sometimes you read Tolstoy and sometimes you read this. It's fine either way.
Well I had fun with it.
