I thought this was going to be about the book selling profession and code use between post WWI German spies with books. It felt like the story was created surrounding a one-liner joke about books and their power. The prequel to this book, Parnassus On Wheels (same author), has better players than this book despite the characters returning in a minor role for The Haunted Bookshop. Roger and Helen Mifflin own a second-hand bookshop in Brooklyn, and Roger couldn't be happier. Though they aren't wealthy, Roger adores his books and can talk books all day. Sequel to Parnassus on Wheels (1917), a quirky book about a romance between a traveling bookseller and a middle-aged spinster. In this installment written in 1919, the two protagonists have settled down and now have a bookshop in Brooklyn. Although Morley's books are now quite dated, they have a sort of innocence that's charming, underpinned by a sincere love of all things bookish that will appeal to bibliophiles.
