I have not read the Lady Emily series up to this point. I plan to reread Book 1 and read Book 2 entirely. However, I can say good things about Book 3, A Fatal Waltz. Emily Ashton is a Victorian English high society girl who has little interest in social engagements and materialism. She investigates crime in these novels of mystery and romantic suspense. Gets a bit haphazard towards the end, but Alexander's portrayal of coffee house culture in 1890s Vienna is quite interesting and offers her a nice way to show how roles for women are different across borders. ...more

I have to admit I was a little bit lost between all the relationships that led Lady Ashton to figuring out who killed Fortescue.

In this third entry in the Lady Emily mystery series, Lady Emily goes to great lengths, including on a trip to Vienna, to help get her friend's husband out of jail. He has been accused of a murder he did not commit, and the police are satisfied to prosecute and eventually execute him without looking any further. This is the second book I've read in the Lady Emily Ashton series. I'm thoroughly enjoying this heroine and the mysteries she unravels. The Victorian setting is very fun, but I must say that Lady Ashton's character is too modern for the time period. I think it's unrealistic. But easy enough to look past because the rest is just good fun. Can't wait for the next one! ...more
