More like 3.5 stars, but overall a good, creepy ghost story.
Ruthie lives with her mother and much younger sister in an isolated farmhouse in Vermont. Then one day Ruthie's mom vanishes. While searching for clues to her moms whereabouts Ruthie finds the diary of Sara Harrison Shea who used to live in their house. The story alternates between Ruthie in the present day and Sara in the early 1900's after her daughter Gertie has died. The book started out really creepy but the last few chapters were a let down for me and lowered my rating.

This book takes place in the present day and also 100 years ago. I gave it 4 stars for the present day part - liked the mystery, the ghosts, the setting especially the Devil's Hand and the story line. But the part that takes place in the past was tedious and repetitive. Still necessary for the story. Still looking for the perfect ghost story - creepy but not too horrible.
