The best, I loved it. The book was sold as a loose retelling of Snow White, but it is *very* loose so don't skip it if fairy tales aren't your thing. It's really an exploration of mother-daughter relationships in a mixed-race family where skin color varies significantly, so much that some are "passing" as white while others are sent away not to give away the others. The writing is beautiful and the observations terrifically sharp.

I feel dense. This book is not on my wavelength. It took me 50 pages to realize I was reading a neo-gothic fairytale. I was mildly disoriented most of the time, and felt like there were two sentences missing for every one present. I don't like being inside of a character's head and still feeling like she's hiding everything from me... and herself.
