Allen's books make for great summer reads, because they are light and comfy, and have well-developed characters and decent storylines. Allen's latest book, Lost Lake, is about a mother and daughter who try to find a new life together a year after their patriarch has passed away. There's nothing revolutionary or epic here, but it's a nice book to read (or listen to) on a balmy summer day. ...more

Kate has been grieving for her husband and has let her mother-in-law Cricket take over her life. While Kate an her daughter Devin are getting ready to move into Crickets house they find a postcard from Kate's great aunt Eby and decide to go visit her at Lost Lake. Eby has just decided to sell her property to a developer though she's not entirely comfortable with this decision. I loved all the characters especially Devin and Beulah Dean. Allen's work is never particularly challenging, but I appreciate that in this one, the characters achieve the outcomes they want by being willing to speak openly and honestly about it to the people that can help them get there. While she always has a magical element to her work, this part is true to life.

I loved this book. The setting of Lost Lake was wonderful, the characters were also very likable. I loved how individual stories were introduced too.
