Very dark, albeit romantic suspense, of a sort.
Jamaica Inn sounds like an interesting place, perhaps even welcoming. But I wouldn't want to go there now that I know what it is like.
Our main character, Mary, goes there to live with her Aunt Patience, but finds her in a desperately unhappy situation. Mary has a desire to help her aunt out of the terror and so has to subject herself to it for a time.
