My Amazon Review:
Not only am I supposed to believe girls in 1866 NY Catholic Schools wore plaid like today, but I'm supposed to accept that the modern Priest Sexual Abuse Scandal was going on even back then. I'm not even Catholic, but this is more than I can take. Since I was stuck in the car with only this audio book for company, I gave it a little longer. A fun book, with a lot of interesting bits about cultural perceptions and sexuality. I'm a bit reticent about some parts of the book (particularly the fact that the main character never actually deals with her lesbianism; it just happens, without any of the reckoning usually involved in discovery of an alternative sexual trait). However, it was an enjoyable read, and a good way to pass a long, long bus ride. ...more

Memoirs of a Geisha meets Tipping the Velvet, with less sex and more tea. I liked the beginning and the end and middle was way too long and whiny.

Edit to add that I just noticed that it won ALA's Stonewall award for 2008...very cool but I still stand by "long and whiny" about the middle.

This was certainly a fascinating study of tea making and the Japanese tea ceremony. The story itself made for good reading although I'm not sure I liked the ending of the book. ...more
