I'm always trying to update my repertoire of important fiction throughout history, and I admittedly struggle with African-American fiction generally. This book is an account of the author's life growing up in the South in the early 20th century, and his exodus to the North as a young man. I found the narrative of his life in the South exceptionally interesting, but once I reached his adulthood in Chicago, I felt the strong flow of the narrative slowed considerably, and I struggled through the la ...more
