As I read this book, I was put in mind of Martin Guerre, a 16th century Frenchman who came home to his wife after having been away for a good number of years. Only it wasn't Martin who returned -- it was an imposter who successfully passed himself off as the long-lost husband. Janet Lewis wrote a lovely novelette, The Wife of Martin Guerre, based on the records from the trial of the imposter, and it's long been a favorite of mine.

A brilliant book . As others have given comprehensive reviews here I’ll just agree that it’s very hard to find another book to read afterwards that will be as engrossing and supremely satisfying .
I am surprised that The Scapegoat was never as acclaimed as Rebecca ; to me it’s every bit as wonderful and indeed better in many ways .
How can I have missed reading this before ?

This is a re-read for me. It's probably 20 years ago I first read this book. It was just as enjoyable and made me really think about the question of identity and who we really are.
