Again I have upgraded my initial rating of THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE upon re-reading the sophomore installment to now classis Millennium Trilogy. Larrson’s choice of Lisbeth’s love interest admittedly still bothers me, but I fully understand the choice now. Larrson is still exploring misogynism and its vile effects. I first thought that since bloody Kalle Blomkvist broke Salander simply went back to her former lover, because men constantly hurt her, but her lover needed to be who 4.25 Stars

Larrson’s choice of Lisbeth’s love interest admittedly still bothers me, but I fully understand the choice now. Larrson is still exploring misogynism and its vile effects. I first thought that since bloody Kalle Blomkvist broke Salander simply went back to her former lover, because men constantly hurt her, but her lover needed to be who Larrson chose for the story to work.

Mikael Blomkvist and a young journalist are preparing a special issue of Millennium Magazine entirely devoted to the ugly sex slave trade. But when the young man and his girlfriend are found murdered in their apartment and evidence left behind links Salander to the crime (and possibly an earlier murder), Blomkvist won’t believe that his friend had any involvement even though he hasn’t seen Lisbeth in over a year. He decides to run a parallel investigation to the police’s investigation…that is if he can find her. Lisbeth has always decided who may see her and where and when. Her new expensive apartment with the name children will understand: Pippi Long stockings ring a bell, readers? Mikael finally sees her one night, but Salander eludes him and her own would-be-murderer. ‘Where has Lisbeth Salander been all this time and why is she avoiding him,’ Kalle Blomkvist wonders.

Lisbeth Salander has been traveling, maturing, and trying to solve Fermat’s Last Theorem. She is still fighting to protect women as the hurricane hits the Caribbean island that she has been staying on. Her maternal instinct surprised me and I found her changed appearance somewhat amusing. She is still keeping tabs on the tattooed Bjurman and the incident "all the evil is front and center exposing a high leveled government cover-up and corruption in the social services system that made her a ward of the Swedish state.

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE starts off with a dramatic punch and does not let up the suspenseful pace until the dramatic dénouement. Larrson built on his characters from THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO rather than letting stagnate or doing things that did not represent growth. I am looking forward to re-reading HORNET to see if my first reaction changes, but one thing I know to be true the Millennium Trilogy will have a prominent place in my permanent library.

I liked The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a lot, but was very disappointed by this, the second in the series of three . . . and probably won't trouble to read the third. Blomkvist's political magazine Millennium is gearing up to publish an exposé by two freelance journos of a sex-trafficking ring that involves people in high places; but then, with the report in its final stages of preparation, the two are brutally murdered . . . and Lisbeth Salander's fingerprints are all over the murder weapon. chưa có cuốn tiểu thuyết nào làm mình bực mình đến vậy. ai nói đây là trinh thám mình chửi cho mà nghe. không có một cái ji gọi là điều tra suy luận logic. từ một chi tiết hay một suy luận phát triển theo một con đường để phá án.

The girl w/ a dragon tattoo rất chậm và luyên thuyên nhưng bắt đầu từ phút Blomkvist ngồi trên bus đi ngang wa khu nhà cũ và bừng tỉnh nhận ra anh nhận thấy đc điều ji kì lạ trong các bức hình - phải nói từ đó về sau hồi hộp gay cấn đến mức mình k muốn đi đánh răng rửa chưa có cuốn tiểu thuyết nào làm mình bực mình đến vậy. ai nói đây là trinh thám mình chửi cho mà nghe. không có một cái ji gọi là điều tra suy luận logic. từ một chi tiết hay một suy luận phát triển theo một con đường để phá án.

The girl w/ a dragon tattoo rất chậm và luyên thuyên nhưng bắt đầu từ phút Blomkvist ngồi trên bus đi ngang wa khu nhà cũ và bừng tỉnh nhận ra anh nhận thấy đc điều ji kì lạ trong các bức hình - phải nói từ đó về sau hồi hộp gay cấn đến mức mình k muốn đi đánh răng rửa mặt vì phải rời khỏi mặt chữ - những chi tiết như cuốn Leviticus cũng thú vị. Mặc dù mình cũng thắc mắc một chi tiết obvious như vậy tại sao ông cậu không bjo nhận ra khi ông xem album hình đó hàng ngàn lần. nhưng qả thực The girl w/ a dragon tattoo để lại ấn tượng rất sâu, cốt truyện cũng khá li kì (mình k thik những vụ án liên quan đến mưu đồ chính trị hay những vấn đề của xã hội đương đại đâu, chẳng hạn như ở The girl who played w/ fire là nạn buôn người)

còn The girl who played with fire này hay chỗ nào??? lòng và lòng vòng, Larsson giống như kiểu phác họa chân dung nhiều miếng hình ghép, những chi tiết câu khách thì cứ câu hoài suốt cả truyện đọc mà bực bỏ mịe, cứ All the devil, national top secret.. đó là chưa kể nhiều chi tiết trong hình ghép lại còn dư thừa. Mình thấy cái này là tối kỵ trong truyện trinh thám. Đúng như Cheknov đã nói 'once a gun appears in the story, it has to be fired', nếu trong truyện đã có chi tiết nào để kể đến thì nó phải đóng góp một vai trò nhất định nào đó để mảnh hình ghép thành hoàn chỉnh. Đọc xong mình đúng kiểu ủa rồi cái chuyện Salander ở Nam Mỹ thì liên quan ji đến truyện này (chắc để dành cho the hornet's nest)? Cái prologue cũng mờ ảo, k biết đó có phải đoạn diễn tả cô gái điếm bị thuốc không.

rồi lại còn những miêu tả về toán học, các công thức, I.T vv... truyện của Larsson lúc nào cũng quá nhiều chi tiết thừa mứa, và vấn đề là The girl who played w/ fire vụ án không hấp dẫn đủ để mình bỏ qua. Duy nhất chỉ có background của Zalanchenko, tức là chỉ còn 4 chương nữa hết nguyên cuốn sách 503 trang, là còn thú vị. Mà mình cũng wonder sao mấy tiểu thuyết Bắc Âu mình đọc cứ tội phạm nào đáng sợ máu lạnh nhất đều sẽ là thành viên của KGB và bjo là GRU.

Đáng tiếc là mình đã bị spolied khi xem The girl w/ a dragon tattoo bản Thụy Điển nên đã biết một phần All the devil là cái ji. Nhưng mình không đoán đc Zalachenko là cha của Salander. Đây chắc là chi tiết ăn khách nhất cuốn này.

5 chương cuối bực mình quá mình phải lên Shmoop coi summary luôn thấy chi tiết nào đáng mới tìm đọc. và chắc cũng phải vậy với The girl who kicked the hornet's nest quá. Để coi đáng hay không đã mới đọc. Bực cả mình. ...more

While I enjoyed learning more about the Salandar character and experiencing her maturity. This book dragged for me in the beginning. I really struggled to get through the first half. The second half of the storyline definitely picked up for me and I found much more intriguing.
