I re-read this for the first time since reading A Dance with Dragons back when that came out, and it seems to me that Martin really did accomplish what he set out to do: these two books are best read back-to-back. In fact, there was a part of me that was wondering if there might not be an excellent way of overlapping the two books and reading them concurrently. Complex & wonderfully heart-wrenchingly fabulous!!!
I love the characters, almost all of them are grey, not black, not white, but grey, complex, mixture of pure & tainted. Driven by what life has made them become. Real. Simply fabulous.
How is it that I absolutely hate Cersei, yet I feel sorry for her that she is trapped in the tangled web she herself wove?

There are still far too many protagonists being killed off for my taste. And there are still not nearly enough antagonists getting what's coming to them either. Still, it's a decent enough story and I do plan to read Dance with Dragons--if he ever gets around to finishing the darn thing.
