I have to agree with the many fans who consider this the weakest of the Song of Ice and Fire books (so far), but it's still pretty damned good. My favorite chapters were the ones about Jaime, who is completely disillusioned and longing for some shred of honor, and Brienne, who's hopelessly searching for "a highborn maid of three-and-ten, with blue eyes and auburn hair".
That lost highborn maid has become a more sympathetic, if still passive, character. She's being manipulated by the creepy but w ...more

I re-read this for the first time since reading A Dance with Dragons back when that came out, and it seems to me that Martin really did accomplish what he set out to do: these two books are best read back-to-back. In fact, there was a part of me that was wondering if there might not be an excellent way of overlapping the two books and reading them concurrently. Obviously, Martin's writing process with years between Feast and Dance didn't help things, but going back and reading it, you can really

This book is the weakest of the four books thus far. It didn't have an ending, which admittedly happens a lot in epic fantasy series, but as an unpublished writer, it irks me that pros can get away with mistakes that would never be allowed for those of us trying to break into the industry. Apparently, it is do as I say not do as I do.
A disappointment for the series.

I had a hard time getting back into this. I read the first 3 about 6 months ago, and it's tough to keep up with all of the characters after taking such a long time off. It gets to a point where I stopped caring which specific Ser was being screwed over by a major player at any given time. I just assume they are all dead or hiding in their castles by now. It's mostly just the big guns left. Also, he is still introducing major players! The church and the citadel just suddenly get all involved and

The stories continue...sort of. At the end of the book, Martin notes that the story had become so complex that he had to divide it in half and publish it in two books. He declares his intent to publish the other half in a year. This was in 2005. Dance with Dragons will be out Sept 30 2008!! ARGH!
In the meantime, may I just say that some folks are getting their just desserts, the truth will out, and karma is a bitch.

I hate it when it seems an author is just writing to write because of lets say a book contract. This is what this book felt like to me. I am glad for all the back story but I hope the next book gets back to what seemed to be the story line at first. I really like the first books and I cannot wait to see the HBO series.

There are still far too many protagonists being killed off for my taste. And there are still not nearly enough antagonists getting what's coming to them either. Still, it's a decent enough story and I do plan to read Dance with Dragons--if he ever gets around to finishing the darn thing.
