Detailed imagery of Byzantian life in a time of great building and internecine tribal battles. Justinian and Theodora of 527 are rewritten as Valarius II and his Empress Alixian.
Mosaicist Crispin is sent for by the Emperor to decorate a new sanctuary. True to the convoluted politics of the day this tale is also twisted about with the many plots of each person pulling towards their own ends amidst the volatile social setting.
