I hate Foundation - the first in Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy.
Foundation originated as eight short stories, five of which have been collated into Foundation, the first of the trilogy. The stories are all good, well written and atmospheric. However, what is most striking about them is that they are purely World-Building - the stories themselves are secondary to the scene-setting, and I find that very interesting and wonderful.

One of the classics. I first read it when a child and have re-read it several times since. The social relations portrayed are stilted and more obviously so as I've grown older, but the cleverness of the essential conceit, the impossible but charmingly, deceptively plausible "psychohistory" - that endures. Its inventor, Hari Seldon is one of the unforgettable characters of science fiction, one character who is plausibly realistic, particularly in his fallibility.
