So I cried about 5 times but at least 1 of those times were happy ones.

Apparently this left so little of a mark on my brain that I forgot about it entirely. I started listening to it again for book club, came to Goodreads to log it, and saw the 2017 review. I think I'm going to call it quits.

I found I never really identified with the main character, or really any of the characters. The world seems interesting. I am not sure how I feel about it being set up sort of "I, Claudius" style where he's an old man recounting his tale.

This might be a book better

Completely blew me away!

I had no preconceived notions when starting this book. Somehow Robin Hobb had escaped my notice until now. "Couldn't put it down" is such an overused term. But, I'll say this. I started the book Sunday evening. By bedtime, I had to force myself to stop reading. This is a good book. It isn't as involved a series like the Wheel of Time or the Song of Ice and Fire. But, it is interesting and it kept me wanting more and knowing what happened to Fitz! I plan on reading books 2 and 3. ...more

The problem with this book was that it lagged too often and for too long. There would be good stretches of great stuff only to be followed by longer stretches of tedious description for stuff I simply couldn't find interest.

The main character was written really well though. Well enough that I haven't entirely ruled out reading the next one. And the writing as a whole was very good.
