Highly enjoyable for the interesting characters and story. Very subtle fantasy elements. The author seems to be more focused on laying the groundwork for the following novels in place of action in this one. I wanted more of the apprentice's training and techniques explained. The action junkie in me was looking for more. However, the court intrigue and plots were well thought out and developed. I have the second book in the series ready to go.

With a clear writing style that draws one in, even though the start was not amazing story-wise to my mind, it evolved to be engrossing, excellent and poignant. Nicely fallible and human characters, none of the ridiculous extreme things seen elsewhere (like whole empires of extreme sadism and thin stereotyped characters - here’s looking at you Goodkind!), but realistic villainy, treachery, and no shortage of baddies to muster against. This is written with humanity, not just shuffling of tropes. H

pleasantly surprised!! i was expecting a little kid's book.. instead i found a suck-your-soul-out-til-the-story's-done book, haha! i couldnt put it down, finished it in 2 days! i cant wait to read the next one!
