My two main complaints are that very little happens and Jordan didn't decide to kill off every female character and start fresh. This was pretty easily my least favorite in the series so far. It started poorly with events from the previous book being told from a different character's perspective. I don't think this anything of particular value and could easily have been included in the previous book (unless Jordan realized he needed this perspective told after that book was completed).

Jordan also started using this technique where you enter a scene in the middle of the event so you have no clue what is going on. Sometimes I guess it is supposed to mislead you into expecting something before it is revealed to be different, but I didn't think it was effective. I was usually just annoyed that I had to read about stuff when I had no idea what was going on, and then when I got filled in on what happened, I had to try and think back on what was said before. It is a lot harder to listen for important details when you can't follow what is happening.

So, it sure felt like practically nothing happened.

I think you could cut out 40 pages from this book, put it at the beginning of the next, and nothing would be missed.

The women are still the worst people in Jordan's fantasy (nightmare?). Aes Sedai in general are supposed to be the "good" women in general. When they discover (view spoiler)

Elayne is completely ruined by this point. Nynaeve and Egwene were already some of the worst characters ever written so no change there. Birgitte was pretty awesome by comparison. ...more

Ok, there appear to be new characters every ten pages. Half the time I didnt have a clue as to what was going on. However, if you stick to the main characters you should find the book enjoyable.

Rand and Sammuel face off in this book. Nynaeve is finally able to approach her lost love.

Rand discusses his bond with Min, Elayne, and Aviendha. Perrin is still my favorite character.
