I didn’t expect to like this, since it did not sound like my kind of fantasy. I was pleasantly surprised, though, and I enjoyed the dry humor.
It’s a collection of short stories with a loose frame: the witcher shows up in different places and hunts down (for a fee) different kinds of monsters; although often the humans turn out to be more villainous. The Last Wish took a little while to grow on me, but grow on me it did, insinuating itself into my affections with the subtlety of one of the monsters that our protagonist Geralt of Rivia, the titular Witcher of the series, deals with regularly.

I read this book as background for a video game which is based upon it. (I haven't played the game, though I would like to at some point).
Geralt is a Witcher, one who hunts monsters. It's a little unclear what he is, he has no parents and is trained to be resistant to poisons but there's a suggestion that he's something other than human. Witchers seem to be as much a race as a profession, and one that is dying out.
