I never could decide if I liked this series, so I kept reading. It is strange, eerie and complex. It is not easy reading and no happy endings, for the most part.
I've probably read this series at least 3 times. The first time, when I was high school, I fell in love with the series and for years, the 6 books that told the story of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever were my very favorite books. This time, for some reason, the books didn't click. I had a difficult time connecting with an antihero who is always angry and who, to be honest, it seems as though even the author doesn't care for very much. I enjoyed this book but it was not an easy read. I struggled through the first few chapters with some of the terminology but I pressed forward and was rewarded with a very unique and very good book. The characters and descriptions were very rich and really made me feel like I was a part of the story. I am anxious to continue in the series.
What can I say, Covenant is not a very likeable guy. The very depiction of a bad hero, his unbelief in his surroundings, does not give him carte blanche.
