Many of you know George R.R. Martin through his fabulous epic fantasy The Song of Ice and Fire. Some of you may even remember him from a little shared universe series called Wildcards, which was a lot of fun. i enjoyed this story, though at times it was bloody. Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire will find this less violent, though, and definitely less sexual.
The narrator was great - he did a fantastic "Marsh" voice.

Martin really tells a good tale. I liked it. It reads like a classic. Kins of a historical feel to it. I really liked the friendship & loyalty that Joshua York and Capt. Marsh came to have. They became true friends ...more

Upon a re-read, I was less enchanted with this book than when I first read it, years ago. I still love the setting, and I still think Abner is a fantastic character, but Joshua as a vampire disappointed me, and the plot involved them flailing around and failing to take the most obvious steps necessary to defeat the bad guy.

A great read by Martin. Vampires old riverboats as only he could portray. This was simply a page turner that I very much enjoyed.
