I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Hyperion series for the better part of 20 years. So I finally got round to reading this, the first book. And I won’t be reading any of the sequels.
I understand that there are a lot of allusions in the story to poets and others. Most of them went straight over my head and to be honest I mainly read books to enjoy the story the writer is telling, not catch obscure references anyway.

Hyperion, the first of Dan Simmons Hyperion Cantos, is one of the most well thought out and put together books I've read in quite a while. The universe that Dan Simmons creates, and the way he slowly unfolds details about that universe is very well done. The charecters are all rich, detailed and believable. The stories that the charecters share span a broad spectrum of Sci-Fi subgenres - from Fantasty/Horror to Cyberpunk, from Social to Military - and each short story could have easily carried i

A brief note for now.
I read this Hugo Winning novel when it was first published and have read it several times since. I was stunned by the time I finished. Irritated and awed while reading, but stunned at the end. Hyperion (and the sequel 'The Fall of Hyperion') are Must Reads for anyone into Science Fiction.
