The characters are very well developed and you truly care what happens to them. Granted this is science fiction, but the author has obviously spent a great amount of time working out the science for his universe. Much is based on current theories and it is written and explained very well. As a science geek, I look for that in the stories I read. Yes, there can be and are great stories that bypass the science to focus on other things, but when the science is used and explained, it needs to be done as well as Dalzelle has done here. Not only is this a story of man's expansion throughout the universe, it is also a cautionary tale of probabilities. Just what or who else is out there and how will they react to us grabbing world after world? Jackson Wolfe is the Captain of the TCS Blue Jacket, DS-701. A Raptor-class destroyer, part of the Black Fleet. A fleet of aged ships in a time of peace. Peace that is going to slip away in a dramatic fashion and Captain Wolfe and his crew will be the ones to confront the cause. I am looking forward to reading the next two novels in the trilogy and am quite unhappy I don't have them at hand....more
Just finished 'The Burning Dark' by Adam Christopher and liked it quite a bit. I see some are rating it poorly and can't disagree more. When reading aJust finished 'The Burning Dark' by Adam Christopher and liked it quite a bit. I see some are rating it poorly and can't disagree more. When reading a story I try to consider whether or not the author has written in this genre previously and if so, how much. If, like this, it is the authors first venture into this specific genre, I tend to go a little easier. Plus I read first for pure entertainment and second for general problems.
With that in mind I feel the story is great. It had me nervous at times and I could visualize the story with ease. In some ways it reminded me of the film "Event Horizon" which is incredibly spooky. Also brought memories of "Solaris". Both films are 5 star in my list.
Yes, there is a lot going on, but it is handled well and isn't 'busy' in any way.
I would have liked to get more information in a few spots, but it doesn't detract from the story at all. In fact, the unknowns add to the story. The reader is wondering about several things, most of which are answered by story end.
A military man at the end of his career awarded a medal for a battle that has been either covered up or deleted from all files. A space station being decommissioned from which crew start to disappear including the Commandant. A star that is unlike any other and has an 'influence' on people. A mysterious book left by the missing Commandant and so much more.
I am left thoughtful and replaying the story in my head. Which to me, means it was a very good story. I want to talk about it and see how others react. I want another story in this vein. Adam Christopher is rising fast on my favorite author list....more

It's labeled as Science Fiction, but like most sci-fi, has a strong basis in reality. It's an extremely well written 'what-if' story centering on a group of people in New York City and what happens when the USA is attacked via the internet. You care for the characters and it's easy to visualize the city as the events unfold. In my opinion, the most telling aspect of the novel is how possible this is. It doesn't take a strong imagination to see how something similar could happen anywhere in the world....more
