I'm really terrible at reading series in sequence. That's why I like books that stand alone even if they build on an larger story sequence. The Dark is Rising (and the series of the same name) is an excellent sample of a book that stands strongly on its own and contributes to an entertaining series.

I don't remember how old I was when I first read the Dark is Rising Cycle, probably elementary school. This was my favorite story of the five.
The story is well told. Cooper does a good job of introducing the readers to the mythology of her world without making it sound like an infodump. She also does a good job with making Will sound at times much older than his years and at other times acting like any 11 year old boy.
