I'm really terrible at reading series in sequence. That's why I like books that stand alone even if they build on an larger story sequence. The Dark is Rising (and the series of the same name) is an excellent sample of a book that stands strongly on its own and contributes to an entertaining series.

I don't remember how old I was when I first read the Dark is Rising Cycle, probably elementary school. This was my favorite story of the five.
The story is well told. Cooper does a good job of introducing the readers to the mythology of her world without making it sound like an infodump. She also does a good job with making Will sound at times much older than his years and at other times acting like any 11 year old boy.

Much more exciting and magical than the first book in this sequence, I enjoyed this one immensely. Now I am excited to see how the sequence progresses, whereas after the first book I was charmed but not that interested in continuing the journey.
Cute kids book about an 11 year old boy who has to battle evil.
