I've read this classic a few times over the years, and I've just finished reading it to my family. It was fun to read out loud, although doing so seems to highlight the fact that there's an awful lot of walking in the book, along with much discussion of the terrain, the local flora, and the visibility of mountain peaks. Tolkien's dialogue is great, though. The kids enjoyed comparing the book to the movie.

Not sure I'd still rate this 5*, but I suppose it benefits from my childhood love of these books and its place in the fantasy canon.
I re-read this out loud to my 9-year-old at bedtime over the past several months. It has to be the first time I've read it in at least 10-15 years, maybe more. I first read this when I was a 4th or 5th grader, probably 33-ish years ago, and I must have lived in Middle Earth for a few years after that, not to mention visiting frequently after that. 5th grade me woul ...more

The Lord of the Rings is, of course, one of the great fantasy classics, and Fellowship is the book that starts it all off. There's a lot of detail about the Shire, and about the contrast between the adventurous Bilbo Baggins and the more quiet Frodo, who never asked to leave home. Gandalf is an old friend if you've read The Hobbit. It's a pretty straight road compared to the twisty turns of the next two books, and a great read.
