Not a bad book per se but nothing spectacular either. I think the movie featuring Martin Freeman as Bilbo will be much, much better, to be honest.
I liked Bilbo, he was quite a lovable character, especially in the second half of the book, once he stopped complaining about wanting to be home and not there, on the road, that is. The rest of the characters though... I actually quite disliked the dwarves. Sure, as a comic relief? Fine. But I just didn't feel any real camaraderie between them and Bilb ...more

So I read and loved the Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was supposed to as a late teenager, but I never had read and loved the Hobbit when I was supposed to before that. I never got around to reading afterwards either, although at the end of the trilogy I was missing the world immensely. I wish i had now, because this dramatization (which was the only audio version my local branch had available when I was setting off on a trip) was probably not the way to go. it had been 20 years since i first read the hobbit. i may have reread it in high school, but i'm not actually sure. in any case, it was just as delightful now as always. a fast-paced, well-told tale of derring-do. was ever a character so likeable as bilbo?

Great book-Tolkien is a spell-binding story teller. I love the world development, the character development, the flow of the story-in short, everything about this book. It's a fun read, as well as a quick one, and now I can't wait to start reading the trilogy which I've also had on my shelf for a while now. If you don't like long descriptions, this is not the book for you. It is definitely a book that makes you want to take your time in reading it, partly because you want to savour the adventure
