I AM DISGUSTED! And jealous! No one’s debut novel should be this damn good! Would you like Kushiel's Dart? If you thrilled at the Battle of Pelennor Fields, you might. Do you like Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Series? If you like the Saxons, you’ll recognize the Skaldi. Like the idea of an ancient warrior race from England, complete with a warrior queen in the mold of Boudicca? There is one here. Like strong women, as well as men, plotting and carrying out mayhem? Yup, got it here. Do you want a plot

This is 1000 pages long, and sedately paced, and the style is more than a bit overwrought, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It’s set in an alternate Europe, where France is “the land of Angels” and a different religion has overtaken Christianity, one whose entire basis is “love as thou wilt”, which means there is a lot of state and church-sanctioned sex going on. We begin with our young protagonist being sold into indenture as a future courtesan: a rare and special one, because she’s a born masochist ...more

I just seem to pick good things to read and watch! Maybe I don’t take enough chances in my selection of what to watch and read, only going with things that I’ve heard positive things about. In this case, I heard about Kushiel’s Dart in the [infrequently updated] weblog of one of my favorite fantasy writers, Steven Brust.
I’ve already warned you, this is going to be a positive review. The characters (if you’ve been reading my blog long, you know how important those are to me) are well-drawn, belie ...more

Alt-history set in late medieval France (I think - I have a hard time pinning down historical eras) - we follow the main character, a young girl growing up in semi-slavery in a temple dedicated to the art of love, who is then remanded to the care of a semi-noble and trained pretty much as a spy. She gains a warrior/priest as a companion and they get carried into multiple adventures.

I read several other people's reviews when I was near the end of this book and I have to say that I can agree with several of the negative as well as positive reviews it recieved. The one I most agree with though is that if you like a world to be spun into your imagination with all it's level of niceties and darkness then this book could be toward your liking. Mixing in the vivid scenes with S&M, Political intrigue and personal relationships that are described in rawness..I was captivated by thi

Sexy, but not gratuitously so. From what I had heard from others, I had been expecting something tawdry, but that was not the case, and I was pleasantly surprised. The characters are human, and the setting drew me in. It did take me a while to get through it, but I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series at some point.

I really enjoyed this book. It's an ongoing series and I thought the first book was probably the best. But I'm a sucker for a drawn out love story and this definitely qualifies. Carey can sometimes be longwinded and she can drag a story out but I've reread these quite a bit.
