Think Jane Austen with magic. Not really my thing, but I did finish it so, extra star.

As the title states, this is a book of letters between two young ladies in England in the post-Napoleonic war era. In many ways, it reads like a 'typical' regency romance novel. Two young girls are corresponding; one is in London for the season, the other has been deemed too immature and likely to get in trouble and so remains on the country estate. The letters are filled with descriptions of items of clothing, dance, and people typical of that era.

The J.G. Ballard book I was reading turned out to be too dreary on top of the past week so I dropped in it favor of this charming read. Two writers polished up a writing exercise of writing to each other in the voice of two characters, Cecelia and Kate. The young women live in the early 1800s, in a setting more idyllic than Jane Austen's. Sheltered but adventurous and magical, their story is light and charming. (November 10, 2004)

My husband rates Sorcery & Cecelia a ten. He found it a quick, fun and entertaining read. I had a harder time getting into the book. Even after the plot took off with one of the character's disppearance I still found my attention wandering. It was until the last 80 or so pages that it completely engrossed me.
