One of the first books I remember reading as a kid. This is the first SF book that disturbed me and made me think we may not be alone. It set a high standard for SF that not many authors have reached since. This is one of the must read books for the SF-phile.
Mysterious aliens make contact with earth just as humans are about to launch their first ships into space. The so-called Overlords put an end to all war and nationalism, hunger and poverty. At the same time, human ingenuity seems to stagnate as well, and the purpose of these Overlords, though seemingly benign, remains mysterious.

This is the story of what happens when hundreds of alien space craft end up hovering over every major world city and the aliens in the ships claim to want nothing from humanity except to just "watch" us in silence.
The story then follows what happens to Earth over the next 100 years and it is a fantastic look at what can happen to humanity if we challenge ourselves and look towards the future instead of being afraid of it.
