Loved Surrender. From the opening chapter that throws straight into action from Cael’s POV, to learning more about Lily’s past, to watching the suppressed romance blossom, to watching the character(s) grow, to the intrigue & suspense, and the settings & scenes-painted & world building … I loved it.
Man, this is one heartstring-tugging story of self-discovery. Lily has always been the weaker of the Mimics of Rune clan—she certainly seemed that way in Little White Lies—but in Surrender she is force Loved Surrender. From the opening chapter that throws straight into action from Cael’s POV, to learning more about Lily’s past, to watching the suppressed romance blossom, to watching the character(s) grow, to the intrigue & suspense, and the settings & scenes-painted & world building … I loved it.
Man, this is one heartstring-tugging story of self-discovery. Lily has always been the weaker of the Mimics of Rune clan—she certainly seemed that way in Little White Lies—but in Surrender she is forced into learning a self-history she didn’t know, whilst being dragged through memories she’d rather to forget. And it’s sad. Even what she puts herself through in a determination to prove she’s stronger than everyone thinks is sad. The sacrifices she makes are sad. :(
Then we have Cael, whose instinct has always been to protect Lily. For the most part, she usually lets him. And having to take a step back to give Lily breathing space to prove herself is not an easy task for him to accomplish. Dude, I fell in love with this guy. With his protectiveness, as well as his inner strength and his respect for Lily that drives him to let her walk her own path. Then there was his pain, which came through almost as tangible to me as Lily’s did. He definitely steals the show whenever he’s on stage. All other blokes in the story pretty much faded into the background—coz, dayum, did Cael have my attention. And not in the macho ‘I am man, hear me roar’ kind of way. It was more in a quiet kind of way, an inner turmoil kind of way—with a subtlety made all the more effective because it was pretty damned obvious Cael ain’t exactly a pune.
I don’t want to say too much without giving it all away. But these shapeshifting marvels give the reader a show that is a whole lot more impressive, and way more serious, than the reader was entertained with in Little White Lies. In fact, as soon as I have an opening slot, I imagine I’ll be reading this one again and with the way this one ended? I cannot wait for the third instalment to arrive.

I gave Little White Lies (Mimics of Rune #1) 5 stars, but this one I must admit captured me more. If 5.5 stars were available, that's what Surrender would receive. Perhaps I ought to change my star rating system.

Anyhoo...

Lily's story is emotionally moving. She's forced to face her haunting past and finds unexpected, but welcomed surprises along the way.

Yummies: Cael. Faithful, rock solid changeling who would do anything for Lily. I could go on & on, but what woman wouldn't want a man as focused ...more

I really enjoyed this! Cael is everything I like in a romance hero, sweet but not sappy, strong, but soft underneath when it comes to Lily, and so gentle despite his size and strength. Love him to bits.

Lily is portrayed so well as she grew throughout the story, going from meek and damaged to finding the strength to face her past. The characterizations are spot on and often tugged on my heart strings.

True to form, Aimee Laine has written yet another amazingly romantic and suspenseful book! My Review:
True to form, Aimee Laine has written yet another amazingly romantic and suspenseful book! This is just crazy, my friends, these books are just that good!!!

In Surrender we continue getting to know the entire gang we first met in book 1, Little White Lies, but the focus is squarely on Lilly and Cael. Lilly is a unique character; she's vulnerable and gentle and more than a bit unsure of herself. Throughout the book we get to understand the reasons behind her insecurities and, even though she's not your typical kick-butt heroine, you can't help but absolutely adore her. She is strong in a quiet, subtle way and has admirable courage. Cael is this steady (and smoldering) rock. He's obviously very much in love with Lilly (we saw that in book 1) and it takes some time to understand why he's been "just a friend" for so long. Cael .... I'm struggling for words here .... is just so absolutely what you want from your guy. He's Lilly's champion: fighting for her, going crazy with worry and anger that someone would hurt her. He's her best friend: supportive and encouraging. He deeply loves her: accepting of even her darkest secret. And --again-- wow, Ms. Laine, how do you manage to verbalize love so well?!?

Now if all this stunningly-well-written romance wasn't enough for you, then there's the suspense/thriller part of story. Yikes! The book barely begins and someone's grabbed Lilly! Craziness is afoot and the plot twists and turns like the Amazon River. There's conspiracy and questionable intentions. You just don't know who Lilly can trust! I do want to note that though there's Lilly's abusive past and a missing teen girl as central components to this story, it never gets too dark for those of us who don't do truly dark and scary stuff.

The ending is so, so, sooooo good! There's so many good things there and then there's some cliff hanging that makes you hungry for book 3. It's pretty clear who book 3 will be about, but I'll leave you in suspense. **wink, wink**

I was only able to read this book a little bit at a time and I looked forward to every chapter. The relationships between the Mimics of Rune are more complicated than I imagined and I enjoyed learning more about Lily and Cael. This story was thrilling and the action and suspense made it hard to put the book down. The plot and setting got increasingly complicated.
