Re-read 2024: I liked it better the second time through. I listened to an audiobook recording and it kept making me lol.

So I love this book more in theory than in practice. Ignatius is a glorious creation, as is the chaotic plot structure, but I sort of dreaded picking up the book and having to deal with him and the ridiculous hijinks he got into Lol. That is a terrific feat of writing but it wasn’t exactly a pleasant page turner.

Like many other reviewers I enjoyed the writing, but could not stand Ignatius. I can identity with him being an only child but he is either the master manipulator or surrounded by dunces? I do wish that I had visited New Orleans before my 10 year mark to have the feel of this unusual city. There are no redeeming qualities with Ignatius - read this for the adventure.

I first read this book in 1979 and loved it. After all this time I didn't recall much of anything about it except that the main character is a true "character". It is interesting to see how time and experience change our responses. Originally I found the book hysterical, my response was more mellow this time around. Still, the story is wildly original and creatively told and worth a look. ...more
