What Members Thought
No one is probably more upset by my three-star rating than I am. I love the Russian greats. I love epic novels. I love Tolstoy. And yet, despite Anna Karenina’s status as a classic, this one only mildly worked for me.

I've been reading this book on and off for a couple years now. Henry James referred to Victorian Novels as loose baggy monsters and that certainly applies here. This is not a plot driven book; its richness emerges from the psychological complexity and depth of the characters.
Reading it slowly over many months helped me enjoy it more. When Levin's jealousy and grumpiness became too much for me I could stop; the same is true for Anna's bitterness and depression. I think reading it in a long focus ...more

While I can see the merits of this classic--the profound insight to the human condition-- I couldn't find interest in the story or the characters. I understood their thoughts and motives. I just didn't understand why this was a story that needed to be told.
