What Members Thought

No one is probably more upset by my three-star rating than I am. I love the Russian greats. I love epic novels. I love Tolstoy. And yet, despite Anna Karenina’s status as a classic, this one only mildly worked for me.

I've been reading this book on and off for a couple years now. Henry James referred to Victorian Novels as loose baggy monsters and that certainly applies here. This is not a plot driven book; its richness emerges from the psychological complexity and depth of the characters.

I didn't really like Anna Karenina (the character) but I really liked the parts of the book about Kitty and Levin!

While I can see the merits of this classic--the profound insight to the human condition-- I couldn't find interest in the story or the characters. I understood their thoughts and motives. I just didn't understand why this was a story that needed to be told.
