Finally got around to reading this one, since I skipped it in high school. Interesting look at racial attitudes in America - set in the 1930s. Didn't realize that it has often been billed as a coming-of-age story until after I read it and looked at a few reviews here on goodreads. The coming-of-age label seems a strange one...I would classify it as a snapshot of American life and a commentary on American thought.
Enjoyable characters. Vivid setting. Quick, engaging read.

Excellent, a standard by which other books should be measured.
Our library read this for the NEA/ArtsMidwest The Big Read. It's excellent.
