Unfortunately, I'm a little slow getting around to this review, so I may fail expressing the great joy I had reading Room. The feelings I experienced at the time were powerful. This is one of the most enthralling books I've read in recent times.
Told in the voice of five-year-old Jack, the novel is initially difficult to get into, but once it picks up, it's really wonderful. The voice never changes and it is hard to imagine how a book with such a strange narrative style can become so powerful. In ...more

This book is fascinating on two fronts: 1. The story, which involves a young woman who is being kept captive. 2. The narrator, who is the 5 year old son of the woman and her captor, and who is only just beginning to realize there is a world outside of "room"--the shed where they are locked up. The first part especially has a lot of tension and action, and then the second part becomes more psychological. I hesitate to go into a lot of details and spoil it for someone who is reading it for the fir

Prior to reading this, a friend of mine told me she stayed up til 4 o'clock in the morning just to finish this-obviously the signs of a goodread! When I opened the book and reviewed the first couple of pages, I was not sure if I would like it due to the syntax, but decided to give it a shot anyways since I was only reading MLS texts! Boy, am I glad I did.

This book was very dark, and yet filled with hope and love. It is narrated by a 5 year-old boy who's whole life revolves around a room in which he and his mother live. Years ago his mother was kidnapped and confined to a sound proof shack. When Jack enters her world, she tries her best to raise him and provide a happy childhood under the confines of the room. His mother tells him lots of stories and sings to him but there is still a disconnect to reality. He never learns to play outside or with

Overall I found Room to be good but disturbing. I had also read Jaycee Dugard's book, and was happy to know this was written before she was found. While I liked Jack as a narrator and seeing his perspective I did have some problems with it. He seemed to be too mature at times. He also seemed to focused on things that I think were to spark controversy especially the breastfeeding. I did rate this book as a four because it was hard to put down.

Glad I read it. Appreciated the novelty and the story. Thankful the author add turns and twists to the plot when the 'this-could-be-seriously-depressing' meter started edging toward the red zone. She wielded a deft hand crafting the tone of the story! Also glad I was able to read a co-worker's copy and didn't purchase for myself. A quick (one-day) summer read.
