This book takes a while to get going. The first 2/5 of the book just takes forever to materialize any kind of plot.
But, once things started happening and she got to Manderley, du Maurier created a driving sense of evil surrounding Rebecca. For a character that you never see as a reader, Rebecca keeps a sense of how the past can haunt us and the idea that places can be imbued with a larger meaning.
