I first read this as a teen in a mystery anthology owned by my mother, even though it was, I read, originally published as romance. These days it can be found in the general fiction section. Published in 1938, I'd say you can call this Gothic romance a classic--and it works on all levels--as both romance but also as a mystery with a twist worthy of Agatha Christie and written with real style. So, since Rebecca is one of my absolute favorite Hitchcock films, when I saw a used copy of this for $3.50 the other day, I finally decided to read the novel that the film is based on. I got a lot of weird stares on the train based on the trashy cover, but the book itself is anything but trashy. I already see a re-read of this in my future. Particularly resonated with the following passage:
