I found this an absorbing read, and I'm no foodie. But I think what's striking in this memoir of Child's love affair with French food is her drive, her dedication to excellence, her passion--there's something attractive in that no matter what the endeavor--as well as fascinating to get a picture of such an elite, esoteric world as high cuisine. What an instant classic! Smooth writing, generous descriptions of foods (and of just the right length), and such a lovely hommage paid to France. Highly recommended.

A fun, funny and inspiring memoir from a true lover of food (and France). I mostly knew Julia because of Julie and Julia, and the memes or clips from her show. What I know now is that Julia spent inordinate time learning, testing, experimenting in the kitchen, and her true dedication to the kitchen and bringing French food to every day Americans was impressive. Julia Child's biography starts out as a fascinating view into life in France only a few years after World War II, and this part of the book is wonderfully evocative of the time period, both the landscape and the food. Alas, time passes and the story devolves into a litany of places she went and the development of her books and TV show and it gets a bit tedious. But it's still worth reading. ...more
