This book started out very promising to me in a horrific yet fascinating kind of way. Definitely one of those 'cant look away from a train wreck' situations. But I kept waiting and waiting and halfway through the book I begin to feel disappointed. It didnt deliver for me. At the end of the book I came away feeling like the author was trying to avoid any sort of ending that could be considered "cliche" and so instead went the completely opposite direction. Once you get over the first, grisly depiction of the rape and nurder, there's so much to like in this book. I picked it up on the last night of a holiday in a rented cottage and had to buy it when I got back. The insights into family life and the way the family and wider community deal with the big event are gripping, as is the element of not so much whodunnit but willhegetcaught! ...more

I hate when the ending of a book cheapens the overall narrative. I understand the need for a happy ending and I have no wish to spoil the book for anyone, but damn sometimes the "happy" ending (if you can call it that in this instance)contradicts everything that came before it and that is just a shame. For that I give it three stars where otherwise it may have been four. ...more

I actually read this book last year but I think it was one of those quick reads. I had a great idea for a story and the first book that came to my mind was 'Lovely Bones' so I picked it back up and am enthralled.

The visual imagery is hard to miss. I am right there in the words seeing and experiencing along with the main character.
