I made the mistake of reading the reviews on here before I read the book, compromising the experience.
Because one reviewer complained about the amount of 'eye descriptions' there were in the book, including a part where someone's eyes were described as 'fierce olives' and one where someone was said to 'butter toast with her tears.' She said the amount of times an author resorted to describing the eyes was conversely related to how bad the author was at writing.

A remarkable story that's told from the viewpoint of a murder victim. This unusual tale is captivating and kept me enthralled the entire way through it.
This was really an intense look at how surviving members of murder victim's family attempt to move through life after the fact. This was not nearly as darkly toned as it may sound though and throughout the book you fall in love with Susie's family as if they were your own. ...more

My book club discussed this book and the reviews were mixed. Some LOVED it, and were very moved by it, others HATED it. I wound up somewhere in the middle. I enjoyed the premise, but did not care deeply about any of the characters. Curiously, those in our group with a more religious background connected more deeply with the book than the agnostics/atheists in the room.

This was hard to read! So much raw, gritty detail. I've never been able to re-read it
