Unfortunately, this book was not nearly as interesting as I thought it would be. Sure, a lot of the cases I enjoyed, as well as the way they were solved by Mma Ramotswe (how do you say Mma???), but what I didn't enjoy was the side-stories. I mean, after 4 pages you get tired of hearing Mma Ramotswe talk about how awesome Botswana is, and I could hardly keep the characters separate, and while I enjoyed reading about her earlier life, it seemed that it took too long to get to the really good stuff ...more

If I could give 3 1/2 stars I would. This was an easy, unchallenging read. The mysteries weren't very deep (I like more of the Agatha Christie/Sherlock Holmes where the answer is very hard to come by), and there didn't seem to be much of a plot to tie the whole story together (just a bunch of jobs that Ramotsway had to solve).

I might read more in the series, but currently I'm not sure. It was interesting to learn more about Botswana, but I don't think I'll run right out for the next one.

Thoroughly enjoyable book! Mma Ramotswe's detective cases are used to reveal her life story and her own dreams and sorrows. I loved how the author, Alexander McCall Smith truly does make this an African story as he exposes us to the cultures of several African nations.

I will look forward to getting to know Mma Precious Ramotswe better as I read other books in this series.

The author's writing style really fits his subject material. The slow, dignified way in which Precious conducts her life, her investigations and her business has something rather old-fashioned and charming about it. Enough to make me pick up most of the series and read them. Should be 3 and 1/2 stars. ...more

I know I'm suppose to love these books, and I did think it was a cute read, but I didn't like how it jumped around. Precious is a awesome character, it is just the formate I didn't care for. I do plan on trying his Scottish books. ...more
