Holy mother of plot twists and intense flawed characters.

This book has won prestigious literary awards and a friend whose tastes I had reason to trust told me it's amazing. Set in 1861 England, many of the blurbs compare it to Dickens, although as one blurber said, much of the text would have made Dickens blush. "Dickens with Lesbians" is how I've seen it luridly described. Through Part I and over 200 pages in, I thought I'd love it as much as my friend.
